Welcome to Café Scientifique Redruth
Café Scientifique Redruth is a branch of the national Café Scientifique network.
Cafés usually begin with conversation, a glass of wine or juice and something to eat. At about 7.20, there is a short talk from a speaker on a scientific topic. After this there is another break to allow glasses to be refilled, plates to be re-stocked and conversations to be continued. This is followed by questions and answers and general discussion. Anyone can ask a question and we positively welcome those which begin "This might be a stupid question, but ...".
Cafés can cover a wide range of issues relating to science and technology. Topics covered by other branches have included AIDS, the Big Bang, biodiversity, cancer, code-breaking, consciousness, Darwinism, ecology, evolution, extreme life, foetal experience, genetically modified organisms, global warming, infertility, nanotechnology, the Public Understanding of Science movement, sports science, superconductors and more. All
Cafés Scientifiques welcome suggestions from the audience about their programmes and offers from potential speakers.
Cafés are free and you can usually just turn up on the night. However contributions towards speakers' expenses and the food and drink allow us to cover our costs. Expressions of interest in advance are welcome to help give us an idea of numbers. Murdoch House, where the Cafés are held, is a lovely venue, but relatively small. Come early for a seat!
Our next talk is on 22nd. October when Stella O'Donnell will talk on 'Tights, Teeth and Television Screens - where would we be without polymers?'. Please re-visit later for more details. Doors open at 7pm for refreshments (and conversation!), with the talk itself beginning at about 7.20pm.
We are in the process of putting together our 2011 programme. If you know of anyone who might be interested in giving a talk to our very enthusiastic audience (or if you would like to do so yourself), please email us or phone us . Any other suggestions also welcome e.g. a particular topic you would find interesting.
